In 'By Blood and Blade', Matthew Harffy takes us through Wessex, Mercia and bleak war-torn Pictland in this beautifully crafted dark age novel. Totally readable and with a flowing storyline, the reader once again follows Beobrand's life-thread as he struggles with responsibilities, ruthless enemies and dark memories which resurface from the past. It is a great addition to the series and the final section is so tense I was glued to the book and could not stop reading till I was finished. Death, suffering and war are major components of the tale but there are light, jovial moments and one cannot help but smile when reading conversations between Beobrand and Acennan, one of his close companions. This book in the continuing Bernicia Chronicles pushes the saga further but leaves an open end to Beobran's story. Lots of action, good descriptions and realistic dialogue.
I can't wait to read Killer of Kings. Beobrand's reputation is growing and I wish I had found these books sooner. I want more battle scenes, but you can't have everything.
Really well written an developed novel an plot line. A excellent series to read in conjunction with Bernard Cornwell's series.
I cannot wait until " Killer of Kings", ( next installment of the Bernica Chronicles) comes out!!!!

Blood and Blade is third book in Bernicia series and it's a great read. I have not read the other two but Harffy does a good job of introducing new readers to the series and taking them along on a well-written adventure with vivid characters and chilling action. Well done!
King St. Oswald travels to Wessex to marry his queen. On the road to North Humbria the queen and her escort travel through enemy territory, where they encounter a bad happening. Later King Oswald has to fight the Pict's which are located at Eden burg.Our hero comes up with special stagecraft which gives St. Oswald victory.
I have really enjoyed the adventures of Beobrand. Really good story. It follows the journey of a young man in Northumbria who becomes a warrior and the a lord in the kingdom of Bernicia. It is a time just prior to the invasion of the Danes in the area. Should be interesting as to where Harffy goes with this in the future.
